For families with young children, a bathtub is often an imperative when purchasing a home, so if your existing tub is worn, marked or rusty, consider your options when renovating.
Replacement. Removing and replacing the tub requires demolition, which is costly.
Refinishing. This is not a matter of some DIY-Level spray-painting. Coatings are formulated for this purpose and the methods used are difficult, if not impossible, for the average homeowner to duplicate. Porcelain, fibreglass and cast-iron tubs can all be refurbished.
Tub liners. With prices equal to or greater than refinishing, bathtub liners are not a more economical option, but they are always cheaper than replacing a bathtub. Also, unlike refinishing, you never need worry about wear on the finish.
So explore all these alternatives when evaluating your bathroom/bathtub renovation.
