Kitchens were once the domain of only the woman of the house. Up until the 70’s the kitchen was traditionally a room of its own and designed to not integrate with the rest of the house. All activity was intended to be hidden away from the husband, children and guests. The little woman was expected to toil away there without disruption and emerge with a fabulous dinner served in a formal dining room, again often a separate room.

If your renovation project has a separate kitchen room you’d be wise to find a way to open it up. This may require a wall or two to be moved. Always get a professional builder to do this. He can assess if the wall is a “load bearing” one or not and this will affect the cost of removal and influence the layout.
The open plan kitchen, dining, family area is here to stay. Modern families now use the kitchen area for much more than just preparing and eating food. Kitchens now must be a centre for all family life - a place where friends have a coffee and chat, kids to do homework and watch TV, th family gathers at the end of a busy day. Perhaps unsurprising, recent studies have shown that people spend more time in their kitchens than in any other room in the home. Many renovators are choosing to extend their homes to achieve a dream family kitchen. Get this right and buyers will love it and be happy to pay more to get it.
